Medicare Information
Unfortunately, Charleston Thyroid Center has opted out of Medicare, effective July 1, 2021. We mailed a letter to all of our Medicare patients on Monday May 17th to explain the process and provide a private contract letter, if you choose to sign it.
We are losing money for each Medicare patient we see. As a single-physician practice, we have no negotiation power like large hospitals do, so our Medicare reimbursement continues to be cut as government entities continue to increase taxation and fees. Almost all small medical practices are struggling, so we’re making this move now to allow us to keep taking care of patients.
You have several options:
- You may transfer your thyroid care to another endocrinologist in your area or to your primary care physician. Send a request to office@charlestonthyroid.com with the name and location of your new physician and we will transfer your records. If your insurance requires a new referral, please contact your primary care physician.
- If you have other insurance, we can attempt to submit your claim to that insurance instead. Most secondary insurances may not accept primary claims and you would be responsible for the entire bill. Medicare regulations also require that you sign a private contract letter accepting financial responsibility and understanding that Medicare will not cover anything. To confirm continued coverage, we suggest calling your other insurance company.
- You may elect to pay out-of-pocket and remain a patient at Charleston Thyroid Center. Medicare regulations mandate that you sign a private contract letter stating that you will be unable to submit claims for out-of-network benefits.
