Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy & Cyst Drainage

Fine needle aspiration biopsy consists of a needle, smaller than what is used to draw blood, used to aspirate or extract thyroid cells.  Using an ultrasound machine to see and localize the tissues under the skin, the needle is inserted through the skin on the front of the neck into the thyroid gland. By performing an FNA procedure, Dr. Henderson can better determine whether your nodule is benign or cancerous and decide on the next steps of your treatment.

Fluid-filled thyroid cysts can also be drained under ultrasound guidance, similar to the procedure above.  In addition, our office is only one of a few in the nation to offer alcohol ablation for thyroid cysts.  Read more about that procedure here.
